Google AI Overviews: surviving (and winning) the new SERP

Target: google ai overviews · 880/mo · KD 63 · +82% YoY 3 min read June 2026

Searches for “google ai overviews” have nearly doubled in a year, mostly from people asking the same nervous question: is Google about to answer my customers' queries itself? Sometimes, yes. The useful question is narrower — which of your searches trigger an Overview, and who's getting cited in it.

The short answer

AI Overviews compress informational searches but barely touch high-intent local ones — the map pack still rules “plumber cairns”. Where Overviews do appear, they cite sources that answer the question directly, structure content clearly and carry real authority. Be citable: direct answers high on the page, marked-up content, genuine expertise.

Where Overviews show up — and where they don't

Overviews concentrate on informational queries: how-to, what-is, comparisons, symptoms, costs. Transactional and local-intent searches largely keep their traditional layout, because Google's ad and maps businesses live there — “emergency electrician cairns” still returns a map pack, not an essay. For a Cairns service business, that means your money searches are mostly safe, and your blog-and-guide traffic is where the compression hits.

The click-through reality

When an Overview answers the question completely, clicks to the pages below drop — there's no pretending otherwise. But Overviews cite sources, and the cited links inherit outsized trust. The strategy flips from “rank #1 and harvest clicks” to “be the source the answer is built from”: cited brands get seen, remembered and clicked by the people who want more than a summary — who are, conveniently, the buyers.

How to be the citation

The pattern across cited pages is consistent: a direct, complete answer to the query near the top (the reason every article on this site opens with a “short answer” box); clean structure Google can parse — real headings, lists where lists are honest, schema markup underneath; and demonstrated experience — first-hand detail, local specifics, an identifiable author entity. Generic content compiled from other summaries is precisely what the Overview replaces; it will never be what the Overview cites.

The FNQ angle

Overviews are weakest exactly where local knowledge is strongest. A generated summary can define “ripple control tariffs”; it can't tell anyone what stinger season does to tour bookings or which Edge Hill Queenslanders still run 1970s switchboards. Content that could only be written from inside Far North Queensland is both AI-resistant and AI-citable — which is why the local substance play matters more now, not less. Pair it with disciplined on-page structure and you're on the right side of the new SERP.
