“#1 on Google — guaranteed, or your money back.” It's the oldest pitch in the industry and it still lands inboxes across Cairns weekly. Here's why the guarantee itself is the warning, plus the rest of the red-flag catalogue, so the next cold call is at least entertaining.

The short answer

Nobody controls Google's rankings, so nobody can guarantee them — Google says so explicitly and warns against firms that claim otherwise. The classic trick: guarantee #1 for a keyword nobody searches, deliver it, invoice. Other top flags: lock-in contracts, secret methods, guaranteed link counts, 'Google partner for SEO' claims, and instant results.

Why the guarantee is impossible — and how it's faked

Rankings are decided by algorithms no outsider controls, shifting constantly, different in every location — literally street by street for local results. Google's own guidance says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking and to beware of anyone who claims to. The pitch survives because it's cheap to fake: guarantee #1 for “best affordable emergency plumber gordonvale northside” — a phrase with zero monthly searches — rank the invisible page, screenshot it, collect. The guarantee was technically honoured; the phone never rang.

The full catalogue

  • Lock-in contracts (6–24 months): confidence in results doesn't need a cage. Month-to-month keeps the provider earning your business every invoice.
  • Secret methods: real SEO is boringly explainable. 'Proprietary techniques we can't reveal' means either nothing, or something Google penalises.
  • Guaranteed link volumes from unnamed sites: quantity promises require junk. Earned links can't be scheduled like deliveries.
  • 'We're a Google Partner': that badge is for Google Ads. Google has no SEO certification or partnership — implying one is the tell.
  • Results in days: honest movement takes weeks to months (the real timeline). Overnight jumps come from tricks that reverse just as fast.
  • They cold-called claiming your site is 'broken': an SEO firm that needs telemarketing for its own leads is telling you how its SEO goes.
  • You can't leave with your assets: if the site, content or profile stays theirs when you go, you were never the customer — you were the hostage.

What honest looks like, for contrast

Realistic timeframes with progress shown monthly against real search data; specific work on specific URLs; plain-language reporting; published or promptly-stated pricing; month-to-month terms; and everything in your name from day one. It's less exciting than a guarantee. It's also the only version where the phone actually rings.
